What is Reiki and Its Potential Benefits?

Maybe you’ve heard of reiki but are unsure what it is. Perhaps you are curious if reiki could hold any benefits for you. Maybe your doctor suggested reiki as a form of alternative therapy to assist with existing medical treatments. Let’s look at what reiki is and its potential benefits.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy healing that reduces stress and anxiety and promotes relaxation. During a reiki session practitioners use their hands to deliver energy to specific areas of your body. The technique improves the flow of energy to support your body’s natural healing mechanisms. Studies have shown that reiki can help promote peace, relaxation, security, and wellness.

Reiki has been around for some time. It was developed in the 1900s by Mikao Usui. The name came from the Japanese words rei, meaning “universal,” and ki, the life force energy that flows through everything. In our day, reiki is used worldwide, including in hospitals and hospices, as a complement to other forms of treatment.

The Health Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is known to improve overall health and well-being and:

  • Create a meditative state
  • Promote tissue and bone healing after an injury or surgery
  • Stimulate the immune system
  • Help with pain relief
  • Promote the body’s ability to heal naturally
  • Support the well-being of those receiving traditional medical protocols such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery

Is Reiki Meant to Replace Traditional Treatments?

No. Reiki is not meant to serve as a substitute for traditional medicine. Instead, reiki serves as a complement to treatments your doctor prescribes. Reiki can work hand in hand with those treatments to allow them to work more effectively.

If you are already in good health and not facing any diagnosed illness, reiki is a great tool to help deal with stress and act as a form of preventive medicine.

What Can Reiki Treat?

Reiki doesn’t specifically treat a particular type of disease or condition, but it has been known to help people with:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Stress-related illnesses

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

Reiki sessions typically last around 50 minutes. You will be lying on a massage table, fully clothed, as your reiki practitioner places their hands, palm down, on or just above your body. They will use 12 to 15 hand positions throughout the session, focusing on specific energy locations. The energy flow determines the time spent in each position through their hands. It is important to note that reiki differs from other touch therapies as no pressure, manipulation, or massage is involved.

Here’s what one recent client had to say:

“I highly recommend Ken for Reiki treatments. He is passionate about his work, and it comes through the energy. I get emotional during the session from all the energy coming in, unblocking, releasing stress, and bringing my body back into balance. I feel very relaxed afterwards. I sent my father to him who suffered from anxiety which interfered with his sleep. It helped calm his mind, and he sleeps better now. Try it and see for yourself!” – Karen
